process

The fabrics I use are mostly cotton, linen and silk, in a wide variety of textures and weights from fine transparent silk organzas, to rich cotton velvets.

Most of these I dye myself using Procion dyes, painting the dye onto the wet fabric giving an effect similar to a watercolour wash.

I like to experiment with and utilse the way different fabrics take and reflect colour as well as the way they behave when put together with each other.

The process works along with the design with a constant conversation between the materials and their qualities and visual stimulus.

In making up my work I use combinations of appliqué, piecing, freehand machine embroidery, quilting and layering.
